Hertfordshire Judo Clubs
host local fun day.
The piece
below was written by Ben Almond:
On
Saturday 14th November 2009
almost 100 local girls and boys aged 5 to 11 took part
in a “Judo Fun Day” held at St Albans Judo Club. The
event was the brain-child of the coaches of three local
judo clubs and the clubs participating were St Albans
Judo Club (who hosted the event), Bury Judo Club from
Hemel Hempstead, Welwyn Garden City Judo Club and the
Haberdashers Aske’s School Judo Club which is affiliated
to WGC.
Bob Cleevely, the event’s host from St Albans, explained
that the coaches of the three clubs got together through
a common desire to meet the needs of judo beginners in
Hertfordshire. “The decision was therefore taken”,
explained Bob, “not to simply run a competitive
intra-club judo tournament but to set up an integrated
‘fun day’ where novices and beginners could be
introduced to the rules and etiquette of the judo
contest environment in a fun, relaxed and informal way
without a focus purely on results.”
Ben Almond, Club Secretary of the WGC Club based at
Gosling said “We had an overwhelming response and far
more entries than we expected but we managed to organise
the whole day so that we could cater for all the
children as best as possible.”
The under 8’s had their own mat where Claire Banham of
St Albans enthusiastically organised over forty 5-7 year
olds by setting up some contest games together with
children from other clubs in small mixed teams. “This
was not serious “club versus club” stuff, “explained
Claire, “but great, fully integrated fun!”
The 8-12 year olds contested for 2 hours over two mats
with coaches from the three clubs acting as referees
including Andy Bonfield, Junior Club Coach at WGC and
Roy Smith, Club Coach at Bury. In
the 8-10 and 10-12 categories, players were weighed in
and placed into small groups with children as close as
possible to their own age, weight, grade and experience. “It
was a great idea”, said Roy, “to allow contests to
continue for the full 2 minutes, even after a win by one
player, as this allowed confidence to grow and our young
beginners to gain the maximum enjoyment from the day.”
The event was sponsored by Hemel Trophies who provided
and engraved participation medals free of charge for all
the competitors.
The event was also an excellent learning experience for
some of the more advanced junior players from the three
clubs, many of whom helped out on the day as table
officials, scorers, time-keepers and even a spot of
supervised refereeing!
In the immediate hours and days after the event, the
organisers and coaches of all clubs received many
e-mails from the clubs officials, spectators and the
parents of children participating in the event. One such
parent wrote “Thank you so much for organising this
fantastic event. It
was my son’s first experience of a judo randori and he
absolutely loved it. He
now actually ‘gets the point’ of doing judo and he can’t
wait for the next competition.”
Ian Wasey, the Honorary Secretary of
SAJC commented “St Albans JC trustees were happy to host
the event and we hope and expect there will be other
similar occasions in the future.”
Another spectator wrote “Thanks for all your efforts to
make this such an enjoyable event for all – especially
the little ones. My
son kept his medal on all night and even wanted to wear
it to bed !”
Dr Rodney Day, St Albans Chairman expressed the
gratitude of everyone present when he thanked and
congratulated the principle organisers, coaches and
helpers from the three clubs involved. “I
have heard many parents this afternoon comment on how
well the event has been run and how the supportive
atmosphere amongst all the clubs has helped the less
experienced judoka enjoy this experience to the full”.
In fact, the day was such a resounding success that the
clubs are already planning to establish the event in the
annual calendar of all participating clubs and are
looking to further develop their unique approach to the
development of judo in Hertfordshire.

NEWSLETTER 15th OCTOBER 2009
Event: B.J.C Welsh National Championships
Venue:
Hereford Leisure Centre
Members of the Bury judo club travelled to Hereford
to take part in the British judo council Welsh
National Championships, coming away with six
national medals.
First up were Jamie Klyen and Liam Trillgreen both
fighting in the U/25 Kg. They were drawn in
different pools and went all the way through to meet
in the final, Jamie winning gold and Liam taking
silver. This was Liam's first national event and
coming away with a silver looks very good for the
future.
Next up was Bethany Curran the current
U/30kg English and Welsh national champion. Beth
moved up a weight group to U/35 this year but showed
her true pedigree winning the gold with some very
good ippon judo.
Next on the mat was Paige Rowlatt who moved up to
U/45kg and was the the smallest girl in her group.
As has been typical of Paige over the years though
this did not bother her and she went on to take the
gold with skillfull ippon judo.
In the boys U/55kg Adam Winchester took a bronze
medal only losing one fight on the day.
Last up was Benjamin Whittle fighting in the 16yrs
to 18yrs category. Ben is the current English
BJC National Champion at U/60 kg but this
championship saw him move up a weight group to U/65
and he did very well eventually taking the silver
medal, only losing to a black belt DAN grade in the
final.
